As we all know by now, shooter games are all the rage among many a gamer. With games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield, gamers have flocked together over the internet to take down the opposite team in the game. From first-person to third-person styles of shooter games, there’s a shooter for everyone. Now how will a new shooter game be when it’s a spin-off from a very popular gaming series? Will that game stand a chance with not only the fans of the original series, but with the fans of previous shooter games?
A while back Capcom announced that they would be making a spin-off game based off of their Resident Evil series. It turns out this game will be an online multiplayer shooter, and will be entitled Umbrella Corps. Being the Resident Evil fan that I have always been since I was a kid, I internally screamed at the chance to team up with my fellow gamers online to take on hordes of Zombies, Ganados, and all the B.O.W.s that Umbrella can throw at me! But then I thought about Capcom’s last spin-off of the Resident Evil series that came out back in 2012 – Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. This game is a third-person shooter (just like Umbrella Corps will be), but the most online-players it could have at a time were four players playing in co-op style. The game itself was horribly short and received quite a bit of bad reviews from various gaming sites around the web. Many were excited for it, but then slowly became disappointed as the game progressed. Now my question is this: Will Umbrella Corps suffer the same fate as well, or, will Capcom learn from past mistakes and make this the multiplayer-shooter Resident Evil game we’ve all been wanting?
The last bit of news to come about on Umbrella Corps was that the game would be delayed from a May release to releasing instead in June. The reason for the delay was so that the team working on it could “spend some extra time optimizing the game to bring you the best experience possible.” On top of the news of the delay, they talked a bit about how you can customize your characters with stickers and patches, and also talked about the communication within the game. So far, it sounds like it will be similar to Call of Duty in some ways, but in the good ol’ fashion of Resident Evil.
My final thought is this: If done properly, this could be an awesome third-person shooter game that will appeal to BOTH shooter game fans and Resident Evil fans alike. But only time will tell, as the game doesn’t release for another couple of months. Capcom’s Umbrella Corps will release on PS4 and PC digitally on June 21st of this year.
