If you’re a gamer, then you’ve most likely heard of Resident Evil. It’s one of the more core video game series in the survival-horror genre. At this year’s E3 the next game in the series was announced, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Now, many fans were excited to hear about a new game being added to the franchise (some still are) but when the trailer was shown, it showed us a whole new idea of the RE franchise. When the game started (with Resident Evil for the PS1, released back in 1996), the camera angle used was fixed camera angles, which carried on until Resident Evil 3. Once Resident Evil 4 came out, we were introduced to third-person camera angles, which carried on until Resident Evil 6, the last main game that was released in the franchise. With the announcement of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, we have now been introduced to yet another camera angle, first-person. Now this camera angle isn’t new to many of us gamers as we have been used to games such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, and as far as horror goes, Outlast. But, regardless, this is a new concept for the Resident Evil series.
Now, I could be wrong, but I have a theory that Capcom kind of ripped off of a game that should have been, but died early, Konami’s P.T. A spiritual successor to Silent Hill, (a special demo was released for the PS4 only, but has since been deleted from the PS store), this game was supposed to be the revival that Silent Hill needed, but never got. Konami parted ways with Kojima (the mind behind P.T. along with Guillermo Del Toro), and Project P.T. became no more. The demo alone looked rather promising, making even me excited for it’s full release. Many followed suite, and eagerly looked forward to the release of the game. Seeing as how many were let down at the end of the game before it even started, it’d make sense for Capcom to feed off of that excitement and think “Gee, we could take this route with the new RE7 game and make bank!”… I mean, come one, it only makes sense.
But here is my question… Will this game be able to compare to all of those before it? It’s taking on a whole new aesthetic, so will it be able to hold up against all of those RE games before it? Also, what does this mean for the future of the series? Will we continue on with the first-person dynamic? Well, perhaps if it succeeds, they will, but if it fails, that may very well be a different story. I don’t know… I for one really don’t care for the new approach that Capcom is taking with the series, I really think they should stick with what they know… Granted, not many more details have been released about the game (such as who we play as, other main characters, etc). It could be a whole new reboot (which if it is… WHY?) or a continuation like many think it will be.
